Having a healthy eating diet seems like a great fuel source for your body that helps you to achieve more in life.

Eating a healthy balanced diet is a must for keeping our health and boosting our energy. An exact example of a balanced healthy diet could be highly different due to the individual characteristics (such as age, gender and lifestyle), cultural background and locally available foods. However, the primary principles of what constitutes a balanced healthy diet stay the same.

Nowadays, more and more people are eating unhealthy foods high in energy, fats, free sugars and salt. On the other hand, they don’t eat enough fruits, vegetables and grains.
What should we eat to reach a balanced healthy diet then?

We could reach our aim by eating a wide variety of foods in the right proportions, and consuming the right amount of food and drink. Taking into account the influence of many social and economic factors our diets could be changed over time. The individual’s diet could be influenced by their income, preferences and beliefs as well as food prices, cultural traditions, geographical and environmental situations (including climate change) which might affect the availability and affordability of healthy foods. Therefore, promoting a balanced healthy diet requires the contribution of multiple sectors, including government.

Let’s take a look at a balanced healthy diet that could be promoted in the societies by policy-makers:

There are 5 main groups of foods which you should include a variety of them in your daily diet.

1. Fruits & Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals that should consist about a third of our daily diets. Eating at least 5 portions or 400g of fruits and vegetables a day reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancers.

2. Starchy foods
Starchy foods such as potatoes, bread, pasta and rice should contain over a third of our daily meal. That means starchy foods should be chosen as a basis in our diets.

3. Milk and dairy foods
Milks and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt are a good source of protein and calcium. However, it is very important to always choose low-fat dairy products. Milks, yogurts and cheese out of soya could also be a great alternatives for dairy products.

4. Beans and protein foods
Foods such as beans, eggs, fish and meat are the main source of protein which is essential for the muscles to grow and repair itself. Meat is also a great source of vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc and B vitamins. It is recommended to always have lean pieces of meat and skinless poultry to reduce the fat content.

5. Unsaturated oils
Some fats such as olive oils are good for our health. Unsaturated fats could lower cholesterol. However, the servings of the oils should be limited to small amounts.

And if you care about your health, eat less saturated fat, sugar and salt.

Consuming too much of saturated fats could increase the level of cholesterol in the blood which can increase the risk of having heart disease. The intake of saturated fats could be reduced, for instance, by boiling instead of frying when cooking, and lowering the consumption of fried and pre-packed foods.

Consuming too much of sugars could increase the risk of tooth decay, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

The high amount of salt consumption could lead into high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. People are mostly unaware of their salt intake. The majority of salt intake comes from processed foods such as bacon, salami, cheese, salty snacks, etc. Beware of small amounts of salt already included your daily foods such as breads. Lowering the daily consumption of salt to the recommended intake of less than 5g per day could prevent 1.7 million deaths per year.

Then, I hope you get the importance of your diet in defining your health. Take care of your physical health as well as your psychological health to be able to have enough energy down the road!
